The metropolitan site of Melton is situated about 40 kilometres from the city of Melbourne, Victoria, and is administered by the City of Melton local government. Although Melton is measured as being a section of the Greater Melbourne region, and being included in the capital’s statistics, it is recorded as having a population of approximately 109,000 residents.

Before European settlement, the Wurundjeri Aboriginal people occupied the area along the Western Plains for about 40,000 years.

In 1839, Thomas Pyke was one of the early European settlers to inhabit the region of Melton, followed by a Simon Staughton who took up residence at the Exford property in 1842. The Exford homestead still remains today with some of the bluestone outbuildings from the earliest 1843 constructions.
The Willows Historical Park is home to the original Willows homestead from the 1850s. This stone-rubble structure originally housed a number of tenants until it was left neglected over the years. However, in 1972, after a concerted effort by local residents, the building was restored by the Council.

Around 1852, the township began to grow rapidly because of traffic to the Ballarat goldfields. Many of the prospectors who travelled through the town bought produce to cater for their needs.

During this time, many businesses flourished, including the Crown Temperance, Melton Hotel, and the Lord Raglan coaching inn; and in 1858, the Melton primary school was opened.

In the late 1850s, a bridge was erected to expand the transport infrastructure across the Djerriwarrh Creek. This historic bridge, with its sandstone frontage, was originally used by horse-drawn traffic, and later motor vehicles, until the 20th century when it was bypassed for a major highway.
In 1864, the Gothic Revival-style Anglican Christ Church was built. By the 1870s, three other churches, namely the Methodist, Presbyterian and Catholic churches were constructed. In 1884, a rail connection was opened between Melton and Melbourne.

In 1916, the Melton Weir was built, though it was not until 1963 that reticulated water from the Djerriwarrh Dam arrived, and brought with it the expansion of Melton from a country town to a Satellite City. This title was officially awarded in 1974.

It has been estimated that Melton South, including the Toolern development, will be larger than the Melbourne CBD within the next twenty years.
